Reviewed Aug 29th, 2018 byWorked a long time at a german radio station - there using Studer 807 and 810 recorder. At home and for music live recording with my bands i used the RS 1500 US. I love the design, handling and feeling using this machine. Mastered some multitrack recordings between 1981 and 1990 with it and digitaised it 2017 (!) - more than 30 years after recording. Dynamics and quality were stunning - without any Noise reduction system. Got peaks of + 18 dB without distortion at 38 cm/sek and a Ampex Grand Master tape of 1988. In the 90s i've used sometimes Super D - NR from Sanyo for jazz recordings.
Today i own two of these Technics RS-1500 US. I will never give them away. Reviewed Feb 17th, 2017 byI have taken up my old tape recorder hobby again and have meanwhile collected several nice decks (Teac X-7 and R1000R, Akai GX 630 and GX635, Revox A- and B-77, etc.) Recently I added a Technics RS-1500US and I am stunned. The technical lay out with a brushless quartz lock capstan motor of some 17cm in diameter, with a capstan of more than 3cm diameter driving two pinch rolls and the tape in a closed loop between them is out of the normal consumer deck world. More important, it still works flawlessly after 35+ years. One way or another it reproduces the sound on my over 40 year old tapes also better than any of the other decks. It is also very solidly and neatly built.
The only minus may be that because al mechanical parts are mounted on the backside of the front panel, some (e.g. The brakes) are a bit harder to reach, so servicing may be more laboursome.Comments.
