We've been following Sea of Thieves for what feels like eons, but a huge question mark still hung over the game's progression mechanics. Until now.How exactly do players progress in? What does it mean to become a 'Pirate Legend'? Is there more to do beyond the relentless pursuit of buried treasure?Today on Mixer, Microsoft and Rare revealed the answers to some of these burning questions, with more to come as we sail towards Sea of Thieves' planned March 2018 launch window. So far, we know that will contain quests for buried treasure, riddles to solve, and gorgeous oceans to sail, showcasing some of the best water physics ever seen in a game. In Sea of Thieves' permanently-connected world, you will encounter other players, and yes, they can kill you.Pirate crews of up to four players will be able to sail large vessels, or go it alone in a smaller, speedier ship should they so choose. But beyond the sailing, skeleton shooting, and treasure chest hunting, what is the 'goal' of Sea of Thieves? Microsoft has been rather quiet about some of Sea of Thieves' finer nuances, and the playtest demos we've experienced at E3 and Gamescom were slimmed-down experiences, hiding some of the games' richer systems and mechanics.
Finally, Rare has offered us a glimpse into how Sea of Thieves pirates will find fortune and glory in its vast oceanic world.Becoming a Pirate LegendSea of Thieves' core gameplay mechanics will revolve around earning reputation with various in-game trading companies, which offer various quests and activities for players to complete either in groups, or solo.As you complete more difficult objectives, new adventures will begin to unlock, granting various cosmetic rewards including player titles, ranks, pirate clothing, and beyond. We've spoken to Rare previously about the reward mechanics in Sea of Thieves, and it will also include things like ship customization, such as adding unique flags and sails to celebrate and represent your pirate crew.So far, Rare has unveiled three trading companies, each with a different playstyle. The Gold Hoarders are all about amassing huge wealth, seeking treasure for profit. These voyages focus on hunting treasure in all of its myriad forms. We talked to Game Director Joe Neate from Rare about Sea of Thieves' progression system, and how cosmetics and quest unlocking will form the basis of play, allowing players to focus on co-operative fun over stats and grinding.Players will earn cosmetics, allowing them to show up how they want to other players, but will also earn access to new voyages and adventures they can share with their friends.
This is what we feel is special about 'Sea of Thieves' progression, and it just feels right for the experience we're creating. Our goal has always been to allow players to play together, not putting barriers up between new and old players, but to create an experience that rewards players for the time and effort they put in. For me, there are 3 areas that they absolutely needs to deliver for this to be a winner:- Huge world events demanding cooperation from many crews. Like defeating the Kraken. Or that skull cloud thingy creating huge storms and making the sea very hard to sail, while you take on a ghost ship.- Massive islands. The engine obviously supports big enviroments, but there needs to be some really big islands with tons of content and secrets to explore.- Activities variety.
Escorting, find the treasure, delivering cargo, making a stand against a big horde. And specially, having Big epic quests that mixes all those activities.

I don't personally find reputation grinds to be worth getting excited about. And my worries continue to grow about this whole game being built around a core microtransaction system (want that customization item? Want to skip the rep grind? The sniper rifle and the fort 'raid' were the most interesting details shown, since they're actually tied to previously unrevealed gameplay. But I think it says a lot when you're unveiling your progression system, what should be one of the biggest reveals of your game, and the best part of it is previously unrevealed gun.Yes, customization is great. But nowhere in the 'Progression' trailer did they imply that your efforts progressing result in interesting new customization options - just more of the same kinds of options you had before.
If you can't differentiate a lvl 50 gold rep character from a lvl 2 on-sight, how does that reward participating in progression? And while I suppose it should be assumed, they also didn't show how progressing through the reputation grind leads to missions that actually add new gameplay. It just seems like more of the same, or again similar but different, missions than before.I also really would have liked to see at least a tease at story. Just something to give this pirate world and its characters some context beyond visual storytelling.Ah well, there's plenty of time before launch for Sea of Thieves to show more, but I'm starting to get worried. These voyages are by far the hardest and most time consuming.Wait until you are at an outpost before going on one of these voyages as they generally require you to find specific animals and deliver them (in the cages you are given at the outpost) to another outpost.Use this map if you need to know where to look for different kinds of animals:Animal Care:All animals need to be kept above water. You don't want them to drown. I usually keep them on the top deck, but you can keep them anywhere. Do pay attention if they are below deck though, because if you have a leak in your boat all your animals could perish pretty quickly.Chickens:Simply keep them out of the water.
A submerged animal can't live long.Pigs:Pigs need to be fed. Every few minutes you have a pig in your possession, be sure to feed it a banana.Snakes:Snakes can't be caught unless they are soothed by music from your hurdy-gurdy or your concertina. Once they seem 'sleepy' you can capture them, but be careful about where you store them. Snakes that wake up can kill your other animals. If they get too bitey on your trip you can play an instrument again to soothe them.Finish 250 voyages for this one.
